I Chronicles 15:2 Then David said, “No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the Lord has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever.”
Occasionally I run across someone who will ask me to pray for some situation in their life. They might be concerned about a health issue, or a family issue, or a work issue. I’m happy to do that. But a lot of the time the person asking never goes to church and has little to do with God in general.
David, at this point in I Chronicles, had recently become king of Israel. We are told of trouble with the Philistines and David leads the army out. But before he goes to battle, He prays and asks God what he should do. God tells him, he follows, and there is a tremendous success! This happened again with the same outcome. But then David decided to move the ark of God to Jerusalem. The ark, a most sacred object in the worship of God. On this venture, David did not seek God. He just did what seemed good to him. And tragedy struck. In today’s verse we see that David learned from his sin.
Does God care about our everyday lives? Of course. It’s good to bring those concerns to Him. But shouldn’t we care more about worshiping Him? If I am willing to ask God about my sore back but seemingly don’t care about being in worship, doesn’t that seem like a problem? Isn’t that sort of saying to God, “I want You to do whatever I ask, but I certainly won’t commit to doing what You want me to do.” It just doesn’t sound right, does it?
I don’t worship God (through church attendance, Bible reading, prayer, etc) to get Him to do what I want. I worship Him because He IS God! God cares a lot more about my relationship with Him than anything else in my life.
Blessings,
Pastor Russ
