I Peter 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.

Over the past few years a new term has entered the vocabulary of many men. It’s abbreviated EDC - every day carry. A whole industry has developed around the concept. A wallet has always been part of most men’s EDC, but now we consider a pocket knife, pen, pencil, notebook. You can even buy special trays on which to set your EDC, ready for the next day’s adventure! I suppose at heart we all want to be MacGyver!

But is it really new? Peter was familiar with the concept of EDC. He knew that left to our own devices we would daily make sure before we left the house to have our malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. And he knew the destruction to our soul these cause. So he has a simple solution. Lay them aside. Not on the special tray you purchased, ready to be taken up again, but permanently laid aside.

If you want to load up on your EDC gear, there are many specialty websites and of course you can check out Amazon. And though no website is required, there are some ready to help you fill yourself up with the things on Peter’s list. These would include, but are not limited to Reddit, Facebook, TikTok, X, BlueSky, etc. We must use these very wisely if they are not to stoke malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander, for they are well-suited to cause us problems.

Lastly, notice Peter’s use of language. This is something that we must do. God will not strip these things out of our hands. We must rid ourselves of them. Not just set down ready to pick up again later. Eliminate them. Treat them like poison. Not like EDC.

Blessings,
