Consider the Source

Job 37:5       God thunders marvelously with His voice;
He does great things which we cannot comprehend.

“Consider the source!” This is a handy statement to pull out whenever we have heard something that we don’t like, or don’t want to deal with. It’s a way to sort of judge the person speaking so we don’t have to evaluate what they’ve said.

Elihu has sat and listened to Job’s comforters for a while and has gotten more antsy as he listened. Finally he ‘erupts’! He says, basically, “I’m younger than you all but you’re all wet and I’ve heard enough!” This, no doubt, did not sit well with the older men, but perhaps they looked at one another and said, “consider the source.”

Yet, Elihu makes some great points! God does indeed do things we can’t comprehend. They’ve been trying to explain why Job is in the shape he’s in. But God’s ways just can’t always be explained. We wish they could. Some may try to convince you that they’ve got Him all figured out. But if they can fully explain God’s ways, they’re just claiming supremacy over God!

When we deal with situations that we can’t understand; when we’ve prayed and God seemingly hasn’t answered, we should remember that He is a good God. He isn’t good because He always does what I tell Him. He is good because He is. He loves us and He cares about us. He wants what’s best for us but He has a broader view than we do. He sees things in light of eternity.

If I can accept on faith that God is good, then I can begin to accept that whatever I’m going through is something that He is aware of and is allowing - in some way, for my good. It may not always seem like it, but consider the Source!
