Eyes on Him!

Job 25:2  “Dominion and awe belong to God; He establishes order in the heights of heaven.

As a young man, I remember a conversation I had with my mother about a lady from her church who had not been there for a few weeks. Mom explained to me that she was a big fan of a televangelist, who had recently been involved in a big scandal. This so rocked her world she quit coming to church. We might wonder at that, but many people find themselves disappointed in a hero. Mom told me, “Keep your eyes on Jesus, not men. Men will disappoint you. Jesus never will.”

Good advice! When we have awe for a man (or woman) we are doomed to disappointment. It’s good to have role models or even heroes, but we must realize that they too are on a faith journey. That feeling of awe should be reserved only for the One Who deserves it: God. God alone is worthy of awe.

In today’s verse we also read that He establishes order in the heights of heaven. I think most people crave a sense of order. It’s certainly easy to look around our world today and see chaos. It’s seemingly everywhere! Where is the order that we read of? Our verse says that God has established order in heaven. But that doesn’t mean, I don’t think, that His order doesn’t extend to earth. It does. But we sometimes misunderstand His order.

God has graciously granted each one a free will. We are free to accept or reject God’s offer of love. Occasionally someone will reject the idea of God because of all the bad they see in the world. “If there really was a God,” they say, “He wouldn’t allow these bad things to happen.” Yet, ironically, these are also people who bristle at the idea of a pastor, a church, the Bible, or even God, telling them what to do or what not to do!

God has established His order. And for now, His order allows men and women to make choices. They often make bad, even destructive choices. But God is not unaware. His desire is that all would come to Him and find forgiveness of sins and new life in Christ. Someday Jesus will return. When He does, God’s order will be visibly established and peace will reign. Until then, we keep our eyes on Him. We know that no man or women is worthy of our awe since they, too, are in need of a Savior!
